It’s been said that when you reach 60, you might as well sell the range. It’s easier to go out, than to cook for just two people.
Ginger and I have probably eaten in every restaurant within 40 miles of our home, or it seems like it. So when we received a $25 gift certificate from Happy Jack’s Restaurant in Russia, Ohio, we just had to go!
What was the catch?
They wanted me to do a restaurant review. When I told them the review would be truthful and straight forward, they agreed. “You do realize, that if I see or taste something bad, I’ll have to tell my readers?” I counseled. “That’s the only way we’ll do it,” they exposed.
It was Friday, February 8, 2008, approximately 6:00 pm. As we parked the car, I mentioned that an early crowd ment something was good. As we entered, to both or our surprise, it felt like we had stepped back into time. “Feels like the 60’s all over again,” I declared to Ginger. “Yeah, sort of like a diner motif,” she described.
There was no sign, so we seated ourselves. We found an out-of-the-way table and started our scanning procedures. Quickly, our waitress Katrina, asked if we had read the Special for the night. “I glanced at them, but give us the scoop,” I instructed. The specials were more than adequate, so Ginger and I both settled on the Walleye dinners, with two sides. The homemade french fries were large enough for two people, but Ginger wanted onion rings. We both opted for a toss salad.
As the food order was being prepared, Ginger acknowledged how clean the restaurant was. Believe me, this in itself, is a triumph for Happy Jack’s. We’ve been in restaurants on vacation, and I was told we were leaving as soon as the water glasses hit the table.
As our meal and conversation came to a halt, the owner, Jack Curl, came to our table and asked if everything was satisfactory? I quickly introduced myself, and told Jack that I was reviewing the restaurant, because his general manager, Susette Miller, asked me to come in. Jack informed us that he was owner of The Houston Market for the past 12 years, but after his first wife past away -- decided to try something different with his new wife, Roxanne. Happy Jack’s is located at 115 North Street, in Russia, Ohio. The building once housed Cruziers. “We turned the bar into a family restaurant,” explained Jack.
“What should I tell my readers, and why should they come to Happy Jack’s?” I asked.
“This is one place that cares about you. Everyone that comes here will be treated like family. The by-product is our food,” he divulged.
Happy Jack’s is opened Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Friday from 9:00 am to 1:00 am. Saturday from 7:00 am to 1:00 am. Sunday from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm. Closed Monday.
Every once in awhile, you come across a little gem that makes you want to keep coming back for more. Happy Jack’s is that kind of place. If you get a chance to try it out -- tell Jack or Susette that Gary and Ginger sent you. And save room for the hot fudge brownie with vanilla ice cream. This dessert alone, is worth the trip.
